Every June 23rd in Puerto Rico we, the natives celebrate the day of San Juan the Baptist by going to the beach at midnight and throwing themselves backwards in the water three times. This ritual is said to bring you good luck for the rest of the year.
I can only guess that this has to be connected with the baptism in the Christian Religion. Natives in days far gone were always adding something to their Christian Teachings and this may be one of them.
Why backwards? Why three times? And when you do this, it is said that you will have good luck for the rest of the year, so what did they do from the beginning of the year?
"The history of San Juan begins a long time before its official foundation, in 1493, during his second voyage, Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico. He named the island "San Juan Bautista", in honor of John the Baptist."
